Artist Spotlight: The Cold Glass Sculptures of Diane Allison

This past weekend, Charbonneau Interiors had the honor of being part of the Texas Fine Craft Show with The Woodlands Arts Council, an inspiring event that celebrates artistry in all its forms. Walking through the exhibits, I was reminded once again how extraordinary it is when people lean into their unique talents—transforming raw materials into something that reflects both innovation and personal vision.

Among the many gifted makers, one artist’s work truly stopped me in my tracks: Diane Allison, a cold glass artist based in Fort Worth, Texas.

Rethinking Glass as an Art Form

When we think of glass art, many of us imagine molten glass, flames, and the delicate process of shaping it through heat. Diane approaches the same medium with an entirely different perspective. Instead of fire, she has mastered the art of cold working glass sculpture—a meticulous process of grinding, sawing, and laminating glass to achieve intricate effects.

Her materials are as fascinating as her technique. Diane works with a mix of optic and dichroic glass, often incorporating repurposed lighthouse lenses. The result? Sculptures that shift and shimmer endlessly, creating impressionistic displays of light and color that change depending on how the light touches them.

The Beauty of Innovation

What struck me most about Diane’s work was not just its beauty, but its originality. She took the same medium used by countless artists, yet chose to approach it from an entirely different angle. In doing so, she has created a body of work that is unmistakably her own.

Her art is a reminder that creativity isn’t about following the expected path—it’s about innovation. It’s about using your gifts in a way no one else can and trusting that your vision will resonate.

Why Her Work Resonates

In interior design, we often talk about the importance of layering a space with pieces that tell a story. Diane’s glass sculptures are exactly that—storytelling through light, material, and vision. They don’t just sit in a room; they transform with it, changing as the day moves and the light evolves.

Pieces like these bring depth and soul to a home. They remind us that true artistry isn’t static—it moves, it breathes, and it reveals something new every time you encounter it.
