The Return of Curves: Softening the Lines of the Home

There’s no denying it: curves are everywhere in interior design right now.

From rounded furniture and sculptural lighting to arched doorways and curved architectural details, the shape is making its way into nearly every corner of the home. But beyond being a beautiful design trend, curves have a way of changing how a space feels—softening hard lines, creating movement, and adding a sense of warmth and ease.

So, why are we seeing them everywhere? And more importantly, how can curves be incorporated into a home in a way that feels intentional rather than simply on trend?

A Softer Approach to Design

Most homes are built around straight lines. Walls meet at right angles, cabinetry creates grids, and furniture often follows the same linear framework. Introduce a curve, and suddenly the room feels different.

A rounded form can soften a hard architectural edge. An arch can create a sense of arrival. A curved piece of furniture can make a seating area feel more intimate and encourage conversation. Even a small curved detail can break up the repetition of straight lines and add visual interest. 

That’s part of what makes curves so versatile. They don’t have to completely change a room to change how it feels. And they're not limited to furniture. Today, we’re seeing them move beyond furniture and into the architecture itself. Think arched openings, rounded windows, curved walls, countertop edges, and custom millwork.

Our Palmer Woods Renovation project gave us the perfect opportunity to explore just how much personality these details can bring to a home. 

Bringing Curves Into the Home

The story begins at the front door, where a grand arched entry establishes the home’s character. Smaller arched windows continue the architectural language across the facade, creating a visual rhythm that carries you toward the front door.

In the primary bath, the curve becomes even more immersive. An arched wall opening frames the freestanding tub, creating a quiet focal point, while a series of bay windows flood the space with natural light. Even the chandelier echoes the same fluidity with a curved silhouette.

In the kitchen, curves take on a more sculptural role. A custom range hood introduces a sweeping silhouette, while the millwork profile on either side echoes its movement. And throughout the living spaces, traditional boxy built-ins are reimagined with coved corners, giving the cabinetry a softer, more furniture-like quality.

Each detail is relatively subtle on its own. Together, however, they create something much more impactful: a home where the curves are intentional, connected, and intrinsic to the overall design. 

Beyond the Trend

Of course, not every home needs an arched doorway or a curved kitchen island. And a room doesn't need to be filled with rounded furniture to embrace the idea. The beauty of curves (and any design trend) is that there isn’t one right way to do it. The key is choosing the expression that feels natural to your home and your personal style. 

Curves can be bold and architectural, or they can appear in the smallest details. Rather than adding curves simply because they're having a moment, consider where a softer line could enhance the way your home looks, feels, or functions. Could an arched opening create a more natural transition between rooms? Could a curved banquette make a breakfast nook more intimate? Could a countertop edge with a little more dimension give a familiar kitchen a completely different character?

Trends come and go, but thoughtful design has staying power. When curves are incorporated with intention—and balanced with the architectural language already present in a home—they can feel less like a trend and more like a timeless expression of how we want to live.
