Patina or Perfection: Choosing the Right Gold Finish for Your Home

Some design decisions are purely aesthetic. Others quietly shape how a home feels for years to come.  When selecting plumbing fixtures, cabinet hardware, and decorative details, finishes often become one of your most important considerations. While initial choices are often driven by style, how a material performs—and how it ages—can have a lasting impact on your space long after installation.

One of the most common conversations we have with clients is whether to choose a PVD finish or a living finish like unlacquered brass. While both beautiful, they create very different experiences within a home. The right choice is ultimately shaped by how your home is lived in, your maintenance preferences, and your overall design direction.

Understanding the Difference

What is a PVD Finish?

PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) is a durable coating applied to a metal base, typically brass or stainless steel.

PVD finishes are highly valued for their consistency and long-term durability. Because the finish is molecularly bonded to the metal, it resists scratching, tarnishing, corrosion, and everyday wear, maintaining its original color and sheen with minimal change over time.

Available in polished, brushed, and matte options, PVD finishes range from warm brass tones to deep bronzes and cooler silvers. For homeowners who prefer a stable, low-maintenance finish, PVD is often the ideal fit.

What is Unlacquered Brass?

Unlacquered brass is solid brass with no protective coating, allowing it to naturally react to air, moisture, and daily use.

When newly installed, unlacquered brass typically displays a bright, reflective golden tone. Over time, it develops a natural patina that softens its appearance and introduces deeper notes of amber, brown, and olive undertones.

For those drawn to historic homes, European influence, or collected interiors, unlacquered brass offers a sense of depth and authenticity that cannot be replicated by an applied coating. It brings a quiet, evolving warmth that ages in step with the home itself.

How We Help Clients Decide

To guide our clients through this decision, we focus on three key considerations: their lifestyle, maintenance expectations, and the overall design vision.

  1. Lifestyle and Daily Use

Every space in a home experiences wear and tear differently.

  • High-Use Areas: Kitchens and bathrooms see constant traffic and regular exposure to water, toothpaste, and dish soaps. In these spaces, finishes that remain stable and require minimal upkeep provide the most ease over time.

  • Secondary Spaces: Powder rooms, guest baths, and butler’s pantries experience lighter use. This allows for greater flexibility to select living finishes that prioritize warmth and artistic character over durability.

  1. Maintenance Expectations

  • Team Perfection (PVD Finishes): Some homeowners prefer finishes that remain visually consistent year after year. In these cases, PVD finishes offer a dependable, low-maintenance solution that preserves its appearance with simple routine care.

  • Team Patina (Living Finishes): Others are drawn to materials that evolve. Living finishes, such as unlacquered brass, develop a natural patina through daily use, creating shifts in tone and texture that are embraced as part of the home's natural character.

  1. The Overall Design Vision

Beyond daily performance, your metal finishes should support the story of your home.

  • Modern and Contemporary: These interiors often favor stable finishes like PVD, polished nickel, or chrome for their clean, crisp, and uniform appearance.

  • Traditional and European-Inspired: In collected or historic interiors, living finishes are embraced for the way they age alongside natural materials like stone, wood, and plaster, creating a timeless sense of depth.

A Growing Appreciation for Both

In recent years, more luxury manufacturers have expanded their offerings to include both PVD and living finishes, giving homeowners greater flexibility in making intentional design decisions that align with their lifestyle and aesthetic direction.

A more layered, mixed-metal approach has also become increasingly common. Finishes are now often layered within the same home (and even within the same space)—using durable PVD in high-use areas, while introducing the warmth of unlacquered brass in lighting and decorative hardware.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy

Before specifying a finish for your project, consider these questions to help clarify your decision:

  • Do you prefer fixtures that remain consistent or evolve over time?

  • How do you feel about natural changes such as patina, fingerprints, or water variation?

  • Are you drawn to crisp, polished interiors or spaces that feel warm and collected?

  • Is this a high-use area of the home or a more occasional, secondary space?

  • Are there other metals or historical elements throughout the home that should be considered for visual harmony?

In conclusion, there is no right or wrong choice between PVD and unlacquered brass. Each offers its own unique value to how a home functions and feels over time. The most successful choice is the one that aligns with how you live.
